What changed in U.S. tariffs and trade, and what it means for the goods you move. Written by the
import.tax Editors from the same Census and tariff data behind the rest of the site; every figure is checked against
that data before it is published.
Importers paid $21.0 billion in duty in July 2026, 24% less than a year earlier, on imports that were 12% larger. Lower rates on goods from China account for most of the fall.
From Sept. 29 the duties cover every company, not only those in Annex III. Imports from the EU, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, 84.4% of that trade, face 15% on patented goods, not 100%.
A 50% duty has applied since Aug. 22 to 1,431 tariff lines from Canada, most under the heading named for motor vehicles. From Sept. 29, listed beer, wine, spirits, whey and large motorcycles are barred instead.
